Andreas von Buddenbrock / “The Ink Trail”

Born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden, Andreas von Buddenbrock has been drawing for as long as he can remember. He graduated from BASIS School of Art in Stockholm in 2011 before earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from the Savannah College of Art and Design, studying in Hong Kong and the United States (Savannah and Atlanta, GA).

After completing his degree in 2015, Andreas worked in New York City as an assistant to Swedish sculptor Anders Krisár, followed by professional training as a Gallery Associate at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA/MoMA PS1). These formative experiences shaped his artistic perspective, bridging fine art, illustration, and curatorial practice.

Now based in Hong Kong, Andreas works as an artist and freelance illustrator under the pseudonym “The Ink Trail.” His clients include both private and commercial institutions such as FC Barcelona, Hang Seng Bank, AIA Group, Black Sheep Restaurants, and Pacific Place. He is the author of The Ink Trail: Hong Kong (Blacksmith Books) and the lead illustrator of the World’s Largest Coloring Book, created in partnership with UBS and awarded a Guinness World Record in 2018.

Working primarily with fine-liner ink pens, Andreas focuses on black-and-white imagery to capture the atmosphere of places and the character of the people within them. His highly detailed, realistic style emphasizes contrast, texture, and composition, continually evolving through close observation and on-location sketching. When not working from his studio, he can often be found outdoors, sketchbook and pen in hand, drawing inspiration from the urban landscape and nature alike.
