Alvin C.K. Lam is a Hong Kong–based artist whose watercolor urban sketches document the city’s unspoken stories and unsung heroes. Drawing since childhood, Alvin’s early passion for sketching evolved into a lifelong practice of capturing everyday moments—people, food, streets, and fleeting scenes—both during his travels and, more intimately, in his hometown.
In 2020, as the world slowed down, Alvin turned his focus to watercolor urban sketching in Hong Kong, embarking on a personal journey of rediscovery. Through patient observation and on-location painting, he began uncovering the extraordinary within the ordinary: old shops, traditional trades, and family-run businesses that quietly shaped Hong Kong’s cultural identity yet risk being forgotten.
Each of Alvin’s paintings tells a story woven into the city’s rise and its rich intangible cultural heritage. His work reflects themes of devotion, resilience, and the enduring tension between progress and tradition, reality and ambition. By portraying craftspeople and small businesses—some representing endangered traditions—his art serves as both a visual archive and a heartfelt tribute to a not-so-distant past and an uncertain future.
With a portable stool, sketchbook, and brush, Alvin paints on the streets amid traffic and crowds, one sketch at a time. Through his work, he invites viewers to slow down, look closer, and honor the remarkable legacy of Hong Kong and the people who keep its spirit alive.
